If you suspect your dog has allergies, there are many different approaches to managing them. Allergy testing: a useful tool to help determine exactly what your dog is allergic to. Over-the-counter allergy medications: Dr. Holcomb will discuss whether or not these medications are appropriate for your pet. Prescription allergy medications: Apoquel is a prescription medication to help manage your pet's allergy symptoms and Dr. Holcomb will help you decide if Apoquel is an option for your pet's allergies. The "Allergy Shot": Cytopoint is an injection that is typically given every 1-2 months and usually significantly improves the itching that is often associated with pet allergies. Dr. Holcomb will discuss this option with you to see if it is an appropriate treatment option for your pet. Immunotherapy: a treatment that is created specifically for your pet's allergies based on the results of an allergy test. This method of densensitizing your pet to certain allergens involves the either administering the immunotherapy in the form of a series of shots given under the skin or drops that are given under the tongue.
